In the period from April 23 to 26, 2018, the 72nd International Youth Scientific Conference «Oil and Gas-2018» was held at the National University of Oil and Gas «Gubkin University», dedicated to the V National Oil and Gas Forum. In 2018, the conference was attended by more than 2000 students, postgraduates, young scientists, specialists, and schoolchildren from 397 educational institutions and industry organizations in Russia and abroad.

The conference was supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, the Russian Gas Society and leading oil and gas companies.

At the plenary meeting of the conference were Deputy Minister of energy of the Russian Federation Pavel Sorokin, Chairman of shell in Russia Cedric cremers, HR Director Schlumberger Russia and Central Asia Denis Petrakov, Director of Emerson LLC Sergey Mishin, President of the Union of oil and gas producers of Russia Gennady Shmal, head of the Department of LUKOIL PJSC Yuri Pikhtovnikov, General Director of LUKOIL-Engineering LLC Vadim Voevodkin, Director of key customers in the oil and gas complex Siemens LLC Vladimir Decyk, Andrey Sumtsov, Director of Digital Technologies at General Electric. The reports discussed the issues of involving young people in solving real production tasks and performing applied scientific research, the first results and problems of creating a system of professional qualifications, the implementation of the Intellectual Field project, as well as the experience of implementing and using digital technologies in the oil and gas industry.

The Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation Sergey Donskoy, the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy Pavel Zavalny, the Governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District Dmitry Kobylkin, the Governor of the Sakhalin Region Oleg Kozhemyako, the head of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations Mikhail Kotyukov, and the heads of leading oil and gas companies also sent their greetings to the participants and organizers of the conference.

Also on the first day of the conference, one of the key events was the full-time stage of the III All-Russian competition for the best student Scientific Association of the Russian Oil and Gas industry, where the winners of the correspondence stage – the 10 best youth teams of Russian universities-presented their projects. In 2018, the projects of the teams of student associations were dedicated to the comprehensive development of the energy potential of the Caspian region, taking into account environmental problems and geopolitical features. According to the decision of the competition commission, formed from representatives of relevant ministries and oil and gas companies, the best team was the Ukhta State Technical University, which, in addition to the passing cup of the best student scientific society, received a certificate for an educational trip to the object of the Caspian region from the official partner of the competition – PJSC LUKOIL. The official sponsor of the competition was organized by Gazprom International.

According to the program, the conference continued with 14 main breakout sessions. In total, more than 700 scientific papers in 23 thematic areas, which were pre-selected by the competition commission, were heard during the two days of the conference. Expert commissions in each of the areas noted the growing interest of young people in conducting scientific activities and an increase in the level of study of the submitted works in general.

In 2018, at the initiative of the Youth Council of the Oil and Gas Industry under the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, the Second All-Russian Intellectual Game among the youth of the oil and gas industry «Oil Owl» was held, which was attended by 83 teams from organizations and universities of the industry in Russia and abroad. According to the results of the semi-final games, 30 best teams competed for the title of the most intelligent team in the oil and gas industry. In a tense fight, the team of young specialists of JSC SEVMORNEFTEGEOFIZIKA won the crystal «Oil Owl» of 2018, the second and third places were taken by the teams of JSC Giprotruboprovod and JSC Giprovostokneft, respectively. The partners of the game were the National Oil and Gas Forum and the NEFTEGAZ Exhibition.

In addition as part of the conference, a meeting without ties was traditionally held, where participants had the opportunity to ask any question they were interested in to the heads of relevant departments and oil and gas companies. The moderator of the meeting Vice-rector for scientific work of the Gubkin University Alexander Muradov, and the youth answered, Deputy Minister of energy of the Russian Federation Pavel Sorokin, head of Department, JSC Zarubezhneft Olga Alexeeva, Vice President of Schlumberger Artem Karapetov, commercial Director of oil and gas business of General Electric Ruslan Pakhomov, head of PJSC LUKOIL Oleg Romanovsky, representatives of PJSC SIBUR holding Stanislav Tails. At the meeting, questions were asked about the prospects for the development of petrochemicals, the problems of digitalization and import substitution, taxation of the oil industry, the results and prospects of the OPEC+ deal, as well as the role of student science in the formation of an innovative scientific and technical base of industry enterprises, internships, internships and employment in leading oil and gas companies. The meeting without ties was sponsored by Shell.

The conference ended with a ceremony of awarding the winners of the conference, competition and intellectual game, which was attended by Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Pavel Sorokin and Vice-Rector of Gubkin University Alexander Muradov.

Gifts to the winners and prize-winners of the conference were provided by the official sponsors and partners of the conference: Schlumberger Company, Gazprom Neft Industrial Automation Technology Park, Nedra Publishing House, Kommersant Publishing House. In addition to the main gifts, the authors of the best scientific works in thematic areas were awarded with incentive prizes and certificates for practical training and internships in oil and gas companies.
